Not Being Enough

Life as a small business owner is hard. Life as a creative entrepreneur is even harder. We put pieces of our heart into every client’s experience and we tentatively hover over that “post” button when we’re about to send the client the photos from their wedding day. It’s such a scary and rewarding thing I do – photographing weddings. I do everything within your power to make it great and hope for the best, but I never really know how things are going to work out. My mind is consumed with thoughts like ‘Did I miss anything?’, ‘Will the client like the photos?’, and the worst, ‘Am I really any good at this?’

In the beginning, I thought it was just me that I was just doubting myself and my abilities. But over the years, I’ve learned that many other creative entrepreneurs feel the exact same way. This is why community is so important. These are the same people who I can vent to, who ‘get’ me, and who know exactly where I’m coming from. It’s great to feel like I’m not alone in this.

But the feeling still remains (and to be honest, it’s always been there), when will I be ‘enough’?

As I’ve worked through some of these struggles, I’ve come a cross a few tips in an article by John Spayde in Experience Life Magazine that might help you as well. If you’re like me a need a little help finding balance between self-improvement and self-acceptance, read on.

Don’t:

  • Believe you’re broken.
  • Think you’re completely fixable.
  • Believe you can think your way there.
  • Have unrealistic expectations.
  • Blame yourself for failure.
  • Assume you’re supposed to feel a certain way.
  • Equating success with happiness.

Do:

  • Embrace who you are today.
  • Accept what you can’t change.
  • Focus on your response to life.
  • Be mindful.
  • Give yourself credit.
  • Dream and do away.

If you’d like to read the whole article, you’ll find it here.
