I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard people say to me “I just don’t know how you do it”. What they’re referring to is my running a household, raising two kids, owning a small business, writing a blog, and volunteering for various other events, organizations, and people. And you know what? Sometimes I don’t know how I do it all either. I do, however, know where I got it from – my mom. When I was growing up, she always took on WAY too many responsibilities and stressed herself out over trivial details for all of the many roles she took on.
But looking in from the outside is easy – you see the accomplishments – but not necessarily the struggle in getting there. You don’t see that I don’t watch TV (or if I do, I am most definitely multi-tasking and it is just on as background noise). You aren’t aware that I cannot relax. I just can’t do it. My mind is always racing with things I need to do and what all needs to get done. You don’t know that I always put myself last and things like going to the gym or getting a pedicure are considered a luxury that I just don’t have time for.
And then there are days (or, let’s be real, weeks) where I just don’t have it all together. I have no motivation to do anything productive. I don’t reply to emails like I should. Dinner is a drive thru. I snap at my kids because I have no patience that day. I cancel lunch plans with friends last minute. The list could go on and on.
Do you ever have those days? If any of this sounds like you, I want to encourage you that it’s going to be okay if you don’t get all of your work done. It’s going to be okay if you make pizza rolls for dinner. And it’s going to be okay if you’re not perfect. Take on what you can, but remember to give yourself a break. You deserve it!
