One day we were driving home s a family from a trampoline park and I could not wait until bedtime. We had already spent the morning at church, then making lunch, then working on laundry, meal prepping lunches for the week, and cleaning up that mess. The last activity of the day was that we took the kids to the trampoline park to have fun before the weekend was over and they had to go back to school. They were both really looking forward to it and then after we were doing jumping and when we said it was time to leave (after a few hours of being there), they were not happy about it.
So there we were, driving down the road, two tired parents and two whiny kids. And then he said. My seven year old put his nose in the air and said, “we never have any fun”. I couldn’t believe it. We had just left a place that we went to solely for him and his sister and he had the gall to say that it was all in vain and wasn’t good enough (or at least that’s what I heard). It was at that moment, that we all had a discussion about being thankful for what we have, what activities we’re involved in, what food we have to eat, a roof over our heads, etc.
But it got me to thinking, why is it that we only talk about what we’re thankful for when it’s around Thanksgiving or during the month of November? We should choose to be thankful every single day and not just during a specific season. So I’m going to break it down for you. Here’s 4 ways to stay grateful for every single thing in your life every single day of the year.
4 Ways to Stay Grateful All Year Long
Start a gratitude journal.
If yours starts like mine did, then you may struggle to be thankful to write anything down other than “I breathed today”. That’s totally okay! Every day, add something else that you are glad that you have in your life. Soon, you’ll be filling pages with all of the things you are grateful for.
Decide to be thankful.
It really is that simple. If we focus on the things in our life that we don’t have, we’re always going to be unhappy and feel “less than”. Choose to acknowledge every single day what God has blessed you with.
Stay present.
Looking ahead to the future and what you don’t have yet will always make you feel like you’re not as accomplished as you should be. The same as looking back. Some of you have had some really tough things you’ve had to overcome and looking at your past you may not feel thankful for those situations. That’s okay if you’re not, but make sure to keep your mind in the here and now and be thankful and grateful for what you have at this moment in time.
Share the love.
If God has blessed you, share what you have with others. I’m not saying to give away all of your possessions. This just means that when you have the opportunity to give your time, talents, expertise, money, food, etc., then you do it. Your abundance could be such a blessing to someone else and, in turn, will make you feel pretty great to help another human being as well.
