Every year around Christmas time, I’m shocked at the price of wrapping paper in the stores. Gifts already cost enough money, so why is it that wrapping them up in a cute way is costly as well? Over the years, I honed my Christmas wrapping skills to where I hardly pay anything to wrap up my gifts. Here’s a few tips on how you can save a few bucks when wrapping your Christmas gifts this year.
1. Buy paper that you can use all year long. Did you know that companies mark up wrapping paper the 6 weeks right before Christmas? Instead of joining the holiday rush, why not buy non-holiday specific paper. A plain red, blue, green, or gold can be used for birthday gifts, wedding gifts, and, you guessed it, Christmas gifts. This way, you also don;t have a ton of Christmas wrapping paper lying around that you can only use once a year.
2. Buy Christmas wrap at after Christmas sales the year before. If you absolutely must have wrapping paper with snowmen and Santa Claus on it, then buy it on December 26th. Companies are more than eager to get rid of all that holiday decor and most will have their entire Christmas section on sale, anywhere from 60-80% off! Take advantage of that savings! I also love to stock up on holiday decor during this time each year.
3. Get good quality paper. There’s nothing worse than finishing up wrapping a package and the paper tears because it’s cheap. Thicker paper is more sturdy and is going to save you a lot of time and headaches.
4. Think outside the box on the details. I love using chipboard letters, wrapping a strip of white fur around a small box, or gluing leaves and berries onto a package. Of course the traditional bow is good too, but those can get expensive. Look for little odds and ends around your house that you have left over from craft projects and see what works for you!
5. Don’t forget to use those scraps of tiny pieces that are left over. No box or gift is ever the same size, and neither will your cut off wrapping paper scraps. Save those scraps for smaller gifts or if it’s a super small piece of paper, fold it in two and turn it into the gift tag. Bonus: it automatically matches the gift!
