Things My Fitbit Taught Me About Myself

This post is sponsored by Kohl’s. I was paid for this post and received the included Fitbit as compensation.

When you have a passion for cooking, the calories and pounds can add up quickly. Why is it that losing weight is never as fun as putting it on? During my quest to battle the bulge over the last few years, I’ve used a Fitbit to track my number of steps each day. I’ve had some times of being really dedicated to exercise and then some, ahem, less productive days. But seeing as how I upgraded my Fitbit to the new Fitbit Versa Ruby, I have really been hitting it hard lately. I set a goal of 12,000 steps per day and I’ve stuck to it! But in the last three weeks of trying out this new device, I’ve learned a few things about myself. So here it goes:

1. I’m a tad bit competitive. Fitbit has an option on their app that allows you to challenge your friends (who also have Fitbits) and it is definitely motivating to me.

2. I will lie to myself about what I eat. I can track my calories in the My Fitness Pal app and it syncs to my Fitbit, so that way I can see what my deficit of my calories is for the day. So when it comes to logging my calories, I will most definitely input the calories in such a way that helps my overall goal for the day. It’s probably not my finest moment, but its reality.

3. I love achieving goals. On the Fitbit app, there are several goals you can meet each day – number of steps, calorie intake, miles walked, and number of active minutes. It’s so rewarding to see all of those circles light up green!
4. I don’t drink enough water. I’ve always known I needed to drink more H20, but it didn’t really hit me until I had to start tracking it. I’ve found that I can drink more room temperature water than anything and while I used to prefer regular water, now I find myself needing to add some flavoring to it in order for me to drink it in large quantities.

5. My heart rate fluctuates throughout the day. I love that the Fitbit Versa tracks my heart rate. After having my son and having high blood pressure during that pregnancy, I’ve been hyper aware of what my heart is doing – especially when I work out or am anxious. It’s one thing to know I’m stressed but it’s another thing altogether to see my heart rate sky rocket while I’m sitting still working on something. Having this heart rate monitor right there on my wrist at any moment, is so comforting.

6. I don’t go up enough stairs on a daily basis. While I was on my cruise, I was a rock star at getting my stairs in – I was getting between 30 and 60 flights every single day! But before and after that, my stair count is severely lacking. Maybe this is a good enough reason to buy a two story house?

7. I have a hard time relaxing. Even when I’m just sitting and watching tv, there’s always a laptop in front of me and I’m busily working on something else. But, along with the “relax” feature on the Fitbit Versa, I am making a conscious effort to take 2 minutes to decompress each day. The app guides you through a breathing exercise and most times when I do the exercise, it decreases my heart rate by at least 2 bpm.8. I’m protective of my Starbucks account. I tend to keep money on my Starbucks app on my phone for special occasions or to reward myself for those days that I have to get up before the sun. There’s a Starbucks app that allows me to pay with the Fitbit on my wrist, but I’ve yet to set it up because I’m afraid I will lose my watch and someone will use my Starbucks money. Weird, I know.

9. I’m boring when it comes to picking a watch face. There’s tons of fun and neat designs on the Fitbit Versa Ruby and yet, I just pick the one with the stats on it. There’s even a clock face that has a digital pet that you can take care of on it (When I saw it, I was immediately transported back to my elementary school days with my Gigapet – remember those??). I also love that the watch bands are interchangeable, so I can swap out the ruby color for another color if I want to.

10. I haven’t focused on myself in a while. This little gadget has me working on myself and my own goals when I’ve been so focused on everyone else lately. Example: normally at my son’s baseball practices I just sit there and watch. Now, I use that time to walk around the fields and get my steps/exercise in. I’m already sweating anyway, so why not help myself get healthy at the same time?

If you’re interested in getting the Fitbit Versa for yourself, Kohl’s has the new Fitbit Charge 3 (soon to be released at $149.99 everyday) and Fitbit Versa Ruby (Kohl’s exclusive color – $199.99 every day). You can earn Kohl’s Cash 10/11-10/17 and redeem it 10/18 -10/28 and earn Kohl’s Cash 10/18-10/21 and redeem it 10/22-10/28. Or, if you’re looking for a sale, the Fitbit Ionic will be $249.99 ( Reg. $299.99) or the Fitbit Ace (for children 8 and up) or Fitbit Alta for $79.99 (Reg. $99.99) from 10/14 through 10/26.
