When you grow up in Texas, you eat a lot of Mexican food and Tex-Mex, and I for one am not mad about it. I absolutely love Mexican food, Tex-Mex, and the real legit food you find over the border. All of it is okay in my book! So with trying so many different versions of “Mexican food”, I’ve gotten to be pretty picky about what places I go to for my fajita fix.
Los Cucos contacted me about trying out their restaurant and to say I was excited was an understatement. After all, chile con queso in any form is always welcome. Plus, I’ve never been to their place before so I thought it might be nice to try a new place and see what I’ve been missing.
First impression: I opted to visit their Baybrook location and even with my knowing the area pretty well, the location is a bit hidden. The entrance off of Bay Area Blvd is only accessible by West bound traffic and the other option to get to their location is through the mall parking lot and an unmarked driveway by the dumpsters in the back. It’s just not the best of situations for new people to find it. It seems as though you just have to know it’s there. Upon pulling into the parking lot, the parking was anything but packed. And in entering the restaurant, it was absolutely dead. There was maybe 3 other tables in the whole place that had people eating at it. Now, I visited on a Monday around lunchtime, so I realize that’s probably not their biggest time for traffic, but still….3 tables full?
The service: Our waitress, Claudia, was really on top of it. She was sweet, attentive, and helpful. She made great recommendations and checked on us often.
Drinks: My friend and I are suckers for pretty drinks. It’s a fun color or has an interesting garnish, sign me up! Apparently, I’m easily bought like that. But I also don’t like drinks that are overly sweet, so I’ve gotten better at being pickier about what goes in to my beverages. I got the black cherry mojito and my friend got the watermelon margarita. If you’re looking for something light and refreshing, the black cherry mojito is it. I couldn’t really even taste the alcohol in it. If you’d like something a little more potent, you want want to opt for the watermelon margarita. It definitely wasn’t lacking in the liquor department and it wasn’t overly sweet either. Both drinks turned out to be pretty good options.
Appetizers: We chose the chile con queso and the table-side guacamole. The queso was average, honestly. Nothing truly special about it, but it was pretty good as far as queso goes. If you want a stellar appetizer, the table-side guacamole was awesome. We went all in and got everything in ours, but if you’re picky about what goes into your guacamole, this is the way to get it. Plus, getting to watch your waitress make that avocado goodness right in front of you is always fun!
Lunch: I opted for the mixed (chicken and beef) fajitas and they were pretty. Best I’ve had? No. But they were still pretty tasty and the portion size was huge! You could easily make two meals out of one with these fajitas.
Dessert: Instead of going the traditional route and getting the sopapillas, tres leches cake, or churros (yes they have all of those), we opted to share the chocolate brownie with pecan praline topping. OMG. If for some reason you can only go for one thing, get this. It’s amazing. It’s warm and sweet and gooey. Yum. So good.
They also have some pretty good gift card specials going on right now…Purchase a $50 gift card and get a free $10 gift card OR purchase a $100 gift card and get a $25 gift card free.
All in all, I’d visit Los Cucos again. The meal was hot and delicious and the wait staff was great. I think that if you can find it, you’ll enjoy it. To end, I’ll tell you what the manager shared with me –
“All we do is cook with love and serve with love.”
