I really enjoy trying my hand at anything crafty and creative. So when I saw that the Rustic Brush opened up near me, I thought I needed to give it a try! You’ve probably heard of one of those places where you go with your girlfriends and drink wine and everyone paints the same thing. I’ve done them a few times, and they’re fun and all, but I almost never hang that painting up in my home. Usually it’s just something fun to do with friends but it’s never really a piece that fits in with my home.
The Rustic Brush intrigued me from the start because of how personalized it is. First of all, you start by picking online which piece you’d like to make. You select the type of wood, size, and what you’d ideally like it to look like. They have a ton of projects to choose from.
Then you select your date and time. Here’s a tip: they have periodic free wine nights! SO grab your best gal pals make sure you have a date with them on that night!
When you arrive, they have your supplies all ready for you on the table and you put your apron on and get ready to get crafty!
Step one is nailing the board together. I chose a piece that is one long single board, but some of the other ladies who were with us had some super cute signs they made that were nailed together. After this, you’re going to sand the edges. You don’t want any rough edges on your board, so make it smooth!
Next up, choose your stain. There’s 3 different stains they offer. They have examples hanging all around the store, so you can visualize what your piece is going to look like with each stain. After you’ve chosen your stain, they’ll get you a little cup with your stain color in it and you’ll get to work wiping it all over the board with a cloth.
Time to let it dry. While you’re waiting for the stain to set, you can peruse their “free designs” section. This is where you can find little odds and ends to add to your sign. I *almost* added a little bird to mine but I decided against it after I saw it all painted.
Once your stain is dry, it’s time to place the custom stencil on your board. Of course, the perfectionist I am had to measure to make sure it was centered and stand on a chair to see it from afar for myself. Once you have it where you want it, you’ll use the scraper to stick it down to the board.
Once all the air pockets are out of your stencil, it’s time to get painting! I gotta a little fancy and did an embre effect with white and gold across mine. But the possibilities are endless! They have a bunch of different colors that are sure to match any room in your home.
After I placed it in front of the dryer again, I used this handy little scraper that helped clean up any edges that looked a little messy.
And voila! Here’s my final piece! What do you think? They finish the back of the board for you by attaching the hangers so all you have to do when get home is put it on a nail in a wall somewhere.
The more I thought about it, the more I thought what a great place this would be to host a bridal shower or house warming party!
