Healthy On the Go Snacks & the Benefits of Buying in Bulk

I love buying my groceries in bulk. I have a Sam’s Club membership and my mom has a Costco membership and we trade off using each other’s memberships (I probably shouldn’t say that…oh well!). The savings you get from buying in bigger quantities is undeniable.

So how does the cost compare when buying in bulk?

On the price tag on the shelf in any grocery-type store, there’s going to be several elements – the price, the sku number, and the price per ounce. Sometimes, you have to really look for it. The price per ounce is what you really want to pay attention to. The lower the price per ounce, the better the savings. Sometimes, companies will offer several different size options, like, for say, paper towels. Be sure to compare the price per ounce on each size, because just because the package contains more, it doesn’t necessarily mean you’re getting a savings for buying more. I’ve actually seen where the price per ounce was higher on the larger quantity on some products – what a scam!

One thing that’s not cost effective to buy in bulk is fruit – unless of course you’re going to make jam, freeze it, or use it immediately. It just goes bad too quickly. (If anyone has any tips on how to keep fruit fresh longer, please let me know!) But I love the taste of fruit. My son didn’t even know candy existed until he was like, 2, because he thought fruit was the best thing there is and that’s all I gave him.

A snack I was recently given were these freeze dried fruits by Crispy Green. The freeze dried snacks are all natural. What does that even mean anymore, right? For these products, the ingredients are fruit. That’s it. No ingredients you can’t pronounce. There is literally only one ingredient listed per bag. It’s just healthy, tasty, fruit.

You do have to wrap your mind around the fact that it’s not going to be juicy – which is hard because the packages have pretty pictures on them of the fruits that are inside. For the taste test, I thought I’d let my son try a few too. If this is any indication, he ate the pineapple, apple, banana, and clementine, but the cantaloupe and mango were left on the table – which is rare for him, since he’s not a picky eater. But I agreed with his leftovers as well. I liked all of the flavors except for those two too.
