DIY Bath Bombs

I invited myself over to a friend’s home.

Now, I don’t make a habit of this and I certainly didn’t do it just because.

A few weeks ago I got to spend some time with a friend of mine I hadn’t seen in probably close to a year. We live about an hour apart, but our schedules just haven’t lined up and then covid hit, so we never got the chance to catch up. Until now.

You see, when I’m friends with someone and really know them, I can tell when something is off. Through her random posts on social media and what it seemed her focus what lately, I could tell she was struggling.

And this is when I invited myself to her house.

I told her I wanted to make bath bombs and I thought she might enjoy making them as well. She made the excuse that her child would be home and might be making noise, but as a mom, I know that’s a cop out. I have two loud kids of my own. We made a date and made it happen.

In the end, we had such a great time making them and they smell amazing! She told me how she didn’t know how much she needed our visit. And I did too. I’m so glad I reached out to her

Be there for your friends. Check in with them. If you really know them and how they work, just show up for them. They need it more than they think they do – and you probably do too.

If you’re interested in making the bath bombs (and I figure that’s why you’re here), I’ve got the instructions for how to make your own bath bombs below. My daughter had a bath with one tonight and she kept feeling her skin and saying how soft she was.

Which kind of molds are best for making bath bombs?

There are many types of molds to choose from. Bath bomb molds come in all kinds of shapes, sizes, and materials so you have plenty of options to make your bath bombs beautiful. The most popular bath bomb molds are aluminum, stainless steel, plastic, and silicone. Each of these molds will give you different results depending on how you would like your final bath bomb to look like.

I used plastic molds, but I’ve heard really great things about silicone ones as well because they’re easy to remove the bath fizzies from.

Which essential oils should I use in the bath fizzies?

Soaking in a warm bath is therapeutic on many levels. Hot baths can relieve sore muscles and joints. Adding essential oils to your bath can be the icing on the cake. They bring about even more benefits, including making your bath more of a luxurious experience. I went with lavender, but other good essential oils for bath bombs would be lemon, eucalyptus (with added sweet orange, geranium, or sandalwood to cut the potency of it), chamomile, frankincense, ylang ylang, grapefruit, or bergamot.

How do you make different colored bath bombs?

In order to change the color of a bath bomb from white to any other color, you’ll need some sort of coloring. Any coloring won’t due because you want it to be safe for your body and not stain your skin, so I’ve found that Mica powder is the best. It’s non-toxic, fragrant and irritant free, and stain free. Plus, it comes in a whole rainbow of colors. To use, just add as much or as little as you like in order to achieve the desired color.

Keyword: bath, bath bomb, bath fizzies, DIY, pamper, relax
Servings: 5 medium-sized bath bombs

Ingredients

  • 1 cup baking soda
  • 1/2 cup citric acid
  • 1/2 cup epsom salt
  • 1/2 cup cornstarch
  • coloring pigment - optional
  • 2 1/2 tablespoons almond oil - or melted coconut oil
  • 3/4 tablespoon water
  • 12-15 drops essential oil
  • Bath bomb molds

Instructions

  • In a medium bowl, mix together all of the dry ingredients. Add as much or as little color pigment to achieve desired look. Whisk to combine.
  • In a separate small bowl, mix together the wet ingredients.
  • Add the wet ingredients to the dry ones very slowly. (This is very important; otherwise you will activate the citric acid which is used to create the fizzing affect.) Mix until combined, and the ingredients look like wet sand.
  • Fill each half of the mold, packing the mixture in slightly until it's overflowing. Press the halves together firmly. Let the filled mold sit for one minute. Lightly tap the mold and gently pull it apart to remove the bath bomb.
  • Let the bath bombs dry for 24 hours before enjoying in the tub.
