My dad has a green thumb. I however, do not. I don’t know what it is! My intentions are always so good but then life happens and it doesn’t get watered for a week. Oops! But recently I visited Cornelius Nursery where they had an event showing us how to make our own herb gardens and I thought I would share the process with you!
Fresh herbs are probably the easiest thing to grow in a small space like an apartment or tiny yard. They’re relatively low upkeep and they love that Texas sun. Planting herbs is also a great way to get into gardening. After all, knowing where you food comes from is great, but growing it yourself is even better!
Fresh herbs are also great for having around so you can include them in your dishes and cocktails! Cornelius Nursery had this Raspberry Smash Mocktail that was so refreshing!
Anyways, on to the tutorial…
Step One. Fill your planter almost to the top with soil. Make 3 decent sized holes in the dirt for where your plants are going to go.
Step Two. Get three herb plants from the store and take them out of their plastic containers. Break up the dirt around the roots end a bit and put them into the holes you made in the dirt.
Step Three. Spread the dirt around to make the top of the soil even.
That’s it! You’ve now completed the herb garden! You could easily make this with whatever herbs you need like maybe an Italian trio with oregano, thyme and basil? I chose to use Organic Genovese Sweet Basil, Organic Italian Parsley, and Organic Creeping Mother Thyme.
Now the tough part – keeping them alive! Here’s a few tips I received from Cornelius Nursery in order to help us all in our growing process.
- If growing indoors, set herbs by the window to enjoy the sun
- Water herbs when top soil feels dry to the touch (about every 2 days)
- If growing outdoors, set herbs in the sun and monitor for more frequent watering
- Harvest leaves often to encourage new growth (and enjoy those new herbs in your favorite dishes!)
Cornelius Nursery also has weekly recipes online, so be sure to check them out. Lastly, don’t be afraid to ask questions at the store where you get your plants. If it’s a nursery, a lot of time they have many Master Gardeners there to help you and answer any questions you may have!
