Making Homemade Pasta Is Easier Than You Might Think

Pasta! There really is no better comfort food, am I right? What would you say if I told you that the pre-packaged dry pasta you’ve been buying for years is actually cheaper and tastier if you make it yourself? Because it SO is!

I will preface this post by saying that I don’t make homemade pasta every time we want to eat it (I just don’t always have the time for that). BUT I do prefer fresh pasta and if you’ve ever been intimidated to make it yourself, I’m going to show you how easy it really is!

We made this simple pasta recipe at the retreat I hosted last month and the attendees just loved it! Fresh pasta isn’t as chewy as the store bought stuff, and takes way longer to cook as well! Need any more reasons to make it?

Want to learn how to make it yourself? Here you go.

Servings: 1

Ingredients

  • 1 egg
  • 3/4 cup flour
  • 1 teaspoon olive oil
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • Parmigiano Reggiano

Step One. Put the flour and salt on a wood board with a shallow spot in the middle. Crack an egg in the middle and add the olive oil.

Step Two. Take a fork and gradually start incorporating the flour in with the egg, working your way around the edge of the flour a little at a time. Once you have it all incorporated, knead the dough. It will be a little tacky. If it’s just outright sticking to your fingers, add a little flour and work it all in together.

Step Three. Wrap the dough in plastic wrap and place in the refrigerator for 30 minutes.

Step Four. Here’s the fun part – it’s time to roll out the dough! If you have a rolling pin, flour your board and get to it! You should roll the pasta out to where you could read a newspaper through it. If you have a Kitchenaid Mixer pasta roller attachment (it’s heaven-sent), You’ll gradually feed the dough through the roller – starting at a thickness of 2 and working your way to about a 6 or 7. If the past tears, pinch it together or fold it in half and smooth it out again. If it starts to get tacky again, add a little flour.

Step Five. Now it’s time to get creative! Cut your pasta anyway you like! I love wide, flat noodles, so paparadelle is usually my go to. But you can really make whatever you like! Once you have it all cut, hang it to dry. I have a pasta drying rack, but if you don’t have one, you can use a kitchen cabinet door! Just open the door and lay it over the top! It won’t stick to the door and it works just the same as a fancy gadget.

Step Six. Liberally salt a pot of boiling water. Make it salty like the ocean! This is the only opportunity you’ll have to season your pasta. Once you have it boiling, drop the pasta in and cook for 2 to 3 minutes or until al dente.

Step Seven. Take it out of the water and top it with butter, your favorite marinara sauce, pesto, or alfredo. Anything will work, really!

Pro Tip: Whatever you decide, make sure to top it with Parmigiano Reggiano to make it over the top delicious! It’ll add that finishing touch your family and guests will love! And make sure to stop by their site here and enter their current sweepstakes to win their Holiday Parmigiano Reggiano Cheese Feast just in time for Thanksgiving and Christmas entertaining! Just think of all the charcuterie boars, alfredo sauces that await you!

It may seem intimidating to make your own pasta from scratch, but it’s really not! You can do it! When you make your pasta, I’d love to see your results!
