Orange Frozen Yogurt

Man, this Texas summer heat is something else!

I know it’s coming, but it always seems to sneak up on me!

In order to beat the heat, we tend to rely on frosty treats as our mid-afternoon snack. Sometimes it’s a snowcone, others it’s ice cream, and sometimes we get fancy and go get froyo (frozen yogurt).

After getting an abundance of oranges, I opted to try my hand at making my own frozen yogurt. This one is SO good, y’all…but then again, what isn’t when it has a little orange liqueur in it?

Orange Frozen Yogurt

Frozen creamy yogurt has an undeniable orange flavor that is sure to cool you off on a hot summer day.

Ingredients

  • 2 cup blood orange juice from about 10 blood oranges
  • 2/3 cup plus 2 tablespoons white sugar
  • 3 cups plain Greek yogurt
  • Zest of 2 blood oranges
  • 4 teaspoons orange liqueur triple sec or Cointreau
  • Fresh lemon juice

Instructions

  • In a small saucepan, warm blood orange juice and sugar over medium-high heat, stirring to dissolve sugar. Bring mixture to a boil and cook until reduce by 1/2. Remove from heat and let cool completely.
  • In a large bowl, whisk together reduced blood orange juice and Greek yogurt until smooth and fully incorporated.
  • Add zest and liqueur, whisking to combine. Add a few drops of fresh lemon juice and a small bit of honey, then whisk and taste. If the mixture is too tart, add a bit more honey. If the mixture is too sweet, add a bit more lemon juice.
  • Refrigerate mixture for at least 4 hours (preferably overnight).
  • Freeze the yogurt base in an ice cream maker according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Finish by freezing the yogurt until hard or enjoy soft immediately.
