Teaching My Kids About Other Countries Starts at Home

After a week long cruise, I couldn’t wait to get back home to my kids. I missed them so much while I was away, even though I have to admit not having them wake me up before the sun every morning was very nice. While on my trip, I was able to experience how other people live. This wasn’t a new concept for me. Ever since I was about 12 or so, I’ve traveled to other countries and have experienced many different cultures. It’s given me such a great world view that I definitely want my children to see as well. I want them to experience other nationalities, cultures, and religions just as I have been able to. Witnessing how other people live in other parts of the world can change you. It can make you realize just how big the world is and how incredibly special the people are that are in it. I want my children to be compassionate and loving towards all people – not just the ones who are like them.

So now I’m back and the struggle with what to do to occupy my kids has come up again. With a 6 and 2 year old, they have very different ideas as to what they want to do. They’re great at playing together and getting along, but they’re definitely on different wavelengths when it comes to their ability to play different games, have imaginative play, and academic-type learning. What’s left is watching tv and I really don’t think I’m alone in this, so I decided to tell you about a recent subscription box service that I found that’s just for them. Well, really it’s for the whole family!

The Night In Box company has several options to choose from – the Kids Night In Boxes, Date Night In Boxes, and Faith Night In Boxes. There’s new boxes sent out every month that have different themes to them and are filled with all sorts of activities and learning moments in them.

For our first Kids Night In Box, we received the Common Bond box. Going to the mailbox is always a treat for the kids – but getting mail that’s just for them? They were ecstatic! This box came with an itinerary, recipe ideas that the family can make together, a Whoever You Are book, blow up globe to toss around and identify countries with, an online music Playlist from different countries, a letter to write to a pen pal (that the company exchanges for you), 2 granola bars, and an Around the World board game.

We had the greatest time as a family with doing all of the activities in this box! We started off by making a trail mix with the included recipe and snacked on it while we played the board game and read the book. My son learned how to read last year, so he loves any chance he gets to show off his skills and read for the family. The board game was fun too! Although right about now I couldn’t tell you where the little people (pawns) are because my daughter walked off with them. Ha! We also sent off the letter for my son’s pen pal, so he’s anxiously awaiting his mail with a response in it.

This was the best way I could think of to get the kids engaged in learning at home, entertained, and happy. The night we did there was no fighting, no whining, and no complaining. It was great! Everyone had a good time and they’ve already asked me when we’re going to do another one. I’d call that a success!
