We all work too much. We don’t take enough time for ourselves and we’re overworked, pushed too hard, and overloaded with activities. So when I say that you need more alone time, you probably thinking…’yeah, that would be nice, but I have no time in my schedule for it’. Sound familiar? Been there, done that. But I’ve also learned that we make time for what we want. And I’m giving you permission now to start making time for yourself. No one can replace you – who you are, what you have to offer – no one. So you had better start taking car of yourself! One way to do that is to get some time alone (it doesn’t have to be much), and process your day. Whether it’s what’s to come, what’s already happened that day, or maybe to pray about something you’re worried about. Get that time alone and I promise you, you’ll feel so much better! So where does that time come from? Here’s 5 helpful ways to get it…
Tip #1 – Wake up early.
I know this is not at all what you want to hear, but it is what it is. I read before that the one thing that billionaires have in common is that they wake up early. What does that mean? That means they wake up before they have to. They set an alarm, allow themselves extra time to get out of bed, get ready for the day, drink some coffee, catch up on the news, whatever – but they don’t wake up at the last possible second and run out the door. That quiet time along in the house before everyone else wakes up is golden! You can use it to read, pray, meditate, get work done, whatever you need to. But the point is that you have the time to yourself to do it and not have to worry about anyone else or what they want from you during that time.
Tip #2 – Make the most of your time.
Time management is to blame for the majority of what causes us stress and needing alone time in the first place. That’s why the better you can manage your time, the more calm you will be. So, take your work with you or make our your grocery list in the car rider line, exercise during your lunch break, and switch off kid activity drop offs with other team mom so that on the opposite days you can get more done while your kids is at practice. This requires some forethought for sure, but soon you’ll find that you actually get more done in a day and therefore can give yourself some “me time” during those times that you’ve freed up in your everyday life.
Tip #3 – Drink tea.
Seriously. This is a real tip. Let me tell you why…. For starters, tea is hot. Therefore, you cannot drink it right away. The physical properties of drinking tea require you to wait until it comes to a palatable temperature before you can start sipping on it. When you take a sip, you breathe in and out more and breathing allows for your heart rate to slow and for your shoulders to relax and become less tense. Want to drink the tea? You can’t easily do it standing, now can you? Drinking tea requires you to sit, breathe, and decompress. That simple act alone is likely to get you a little relaxation injected into your day.
Some of my favorite flavors of tea are from Celestial Seasonings®. I’ve always liked them, but after I visited their factory and experienced the potency of their “Peppermint Room” for myself, I knew that this was some great quality tea. Celestial Seasonings® Peppermint will always be my favorite tea variety. I just add a little bit of honey and drink up! A new flavor I just tried out is the Celestial Seasonings® Cinnamon Express Black Tea. It’s got a hint of spice that’s perfect for these winter months we’re heading into because it gives you that morning jolt you need to get you out of bed and on with your day. And when I’m not feeling well, the Celestial Seasonings® Lemon Zinger is my drink of choice for those mornings when I wake up with a scratchy throat and need something warm to soothe it. I found all of these teas at my local Walmart. Shop these teas by clicking on the image below:

Tip #4 – Get physically away.
Get someone to watch your kids, tell you spouse you need some “me time”, or tell whoever you need to that you need to focus on yourself for just a few hours. If you live near a national park, ocean, beach, mountains, dessert, or whatever landscape – go there. Even if it’s just for an hour or so. Getting away from your normal surroundings does wonders for your Walk outside. Breathe in the fresh air.
Tip #5 – Stay up late.
Yes, this is probably the opposite of that first point I made I know, but it’s also reality. My husband and I love our time alone after the kids get in bed and the house goes quiet. It’s peaceful and it’s a great way to decompress. Would we get more sleep if we went to bed earlier? Probably. But that quiet time at the end of the day is priceless.
