Fear. Those four little letters make up a very powerful word. That word can keep you from making progress, moving forward, or experiencing life in a way you never have before. Last week, I decided to face my fears and try making a video. I’ve always been a still photograph kind of girl, so teaching myself something new was scary to say the least. One, it involved a new skill set that I didn’t have previously. The other part of it was that I was actually going to have to speak on camera. Cringe. Oh, how I don’t like the sound of my own voice. But I guess that’s most people, isn’t it?
I was hosting an event and I knew I wanted to make a dessert for it. Not just any dessert though – I wanted to make the Birthday Cake recipe from Milk Bar. I have loved Christina Tossi’s style since I first saw her on MasterChef, but when I watched the episode of Chef’s Table on Netflix that featured her bakery Milk Bar, I knew I just had to have that cake (and the Crack Pie, but that’s a project for a different day).
They ship the cakes from NYC, but I wasn’t going to pay $85 for a cake to be shipped to me. So I found the recipe for it on her website and decided to give it a go.
This was the most in depth and time consuming cake I have ever made. BUT it was also probably the most delicious. It’s sweet, with a soft sponge-y cake and crunchy cookie bits mixed in. Everyone at the event raved over it! And I may have attacked the leftovers with just a fork; skipping the plate altogether. It was dang good. So now for the moment you’ve been waiting for…the cake video. Please let me know what you think and how I could improve!
