Ingredients

For the meatballs

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1/4 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 small onion finely chopped
  • 1 clove garlic finely minced
  • 1 tablespoon parsley chopped
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon pepper
  • 1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/8 teaspoon ground allspice
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tablespoon milk
  • 1 tablespoon oil

For the gravy

  • 3 tablespoons butter
  • 2 tablespoons flour
  • 1 1/2 cups beef broth
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1 teaspoon smooth Dijon mustard
  • 1 tablespoon grape jelly
  • salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  • Make the meatballs. Combine all of the ingredients (except the oil) in a large bowl. Using a small scoop (about 1 tablespoon), portion out the meat mixture and roll into balls.
  • Place on a cookie sheet and freeze for 5-10 minutes (this will help the meatballs stay round when cooking).
  • Time to cook the meatballs. Heat the oil in a large skillet. Brown teh meatballs on all sides until they are cooked through. This will take about 6-8 minutes. When finished, remove the meatballs from the pan and set aside.
  • Let's make some gravy. Turn the heat on the skillet to medium heat. Melt the butter in the pan and then add the flour, whisking constantly until the sauce turns medium brown.
  • Pour the beef broth while whisking constantly and simmer until it thickens. Next, add the milk, mustard, and jelly. Simmer gently over medium-low heat until creamy. Season to taste.
  • Let's put it together. Place the meatballs back in the gravy and warm until heated through. Serve with pasta, on a roll, or with mashed potatoes.
