I love taking something that is ordinary and making it extra special. Whether it’s flavored ice cubes, grilled cheese sandwiches with fancy cheese, or an updated Shirley Temple, I’m always thinking of ways I can update the classics. This is exactly how it came about that I wanted to make butter into shapes. Why does butter always have to be in a square or a circle? The answer? It doesn’t!

So when I decided to serve my husband scones for Valentine’s Day, I thought, why not offer him some fancy butter as well?

You won’t believe how easy it really is to make butter shapes! All you need is:

  • Butter
  • Silicone Candy/Ice Cube Mold

The amount of butter and type of mold is completely up to you, but I’ve found that silicone molds are the easiest to get the butter out after it’s hardened.

Step One. You can use salted or unsalted butter for this – whichever you prefer is fine. Leave the butter out so it comes to room temperature. Do not melt the butter! If you melt the butter to a liquid state, it will separate and not set up again.

Step Two. Once the butter is room temperature, use a small spoon to push the butter into the individual crevices of the silicone mold. There is no clean way to do this. I tried using a pastry bag. I tried using a ziplock bag. Both bags busted on me because the consistency of the butter is too thick. So, do your best to press the butter down into the molds and press out any air pockets you find. Be sure to fill the molds to the top.

Step Three. With the back of a butter knife, run it across the top of the mold, creating a flat and even back on the butter in the molds.

Step Four. Place the mold in the freezer and leave there for 2-4 hours or until firm. You know have shaped butter pads! You

Now these don’t have to be just for Valentine’s Day, oh no! They would also be perfect for a baby shower, bridal brunch, or special touch for a wedding day! With the endless amounts of silicone molds out there, you can really make any shape you like. And your guests will be impressed! (It’ll bee our secret just how easy they really are)
