This past weekend we had the greatest time! My mom and her friend invited all the girls between the families to have a “baking day” where we drank wine, told stories, and oh yeah, made some sweets! We made rice krispy treats, almond cookies, toffee, and 3 different kinds of cake balls. Even my 3 year old baby girl had fun crumbling and mixing the cake with her little fingers.
But, as always, I want to help you at home who may not know how to make cake balls. I mean, I didn’t before last weekend until my friend Teri showed me how. She’s been making them for years out of her home for her kids’ birthdays and teacher gifts, so I thought who better to learn from!
Cake balls are cake and buttercream icing combined, rolled into two-bite sized balls and then covered in candy coating. They’re fun, festive, and never forgotten at any event.
Below you’ll fins the step by step instructions as well as a few tips!
Tips
- Have fun with your ingredients! Mix together different cake and icing combinations to make fun flavors! (Like how about a lemon cake with strawberry icing? Yum!)
- The color combinations are endless when it comes to candy melts. If you want to get the most out of one color, simply buy a white and then use candy coloring to change the colors as you like.
- You can decorate them with whatever color icing and sprinkles you like, or you can even put them on sticks and make them into cake pops!
- You think your cake pops turned out ugly or bumpy? Behold – the power of the sprinkle! But some embellishments on top of that ball and keep on rolling!
Cake Balls
Ingredients
- 1 cake box mix prepared
- 3/4 cup buttercream icing
- candy melts
Instructions
- Take a regular cake mix from the store and make the cake per the instructions on the box. Allow the cake to cool completely.
- After the cake has completely cooled, use your hands to crumble the cake. Make sure not to press the cake together - you don't want it sticking together yet.
- Add the buttercream icing (again, a store bought container of it will do) and combine the cake and icing together. You will want to now press it together and make it firmly packed.
- Use a 2 tablespoon scoop to portion out scoops of the cake mixture. Using your hands, roll them into perfectly round balls in your hands. Place in the fridge on a cookie sheet for 20 minutes.
- Melt the candy melts in the microwave (30 seconds at a time or follow the instructions on the package) and stir until silky smooth.
- Put a cake ball on a spoon and dunk it into the candy melt. Coat it completely. Scoop it out of the mixture and gently tap the back of the spoon unless the excess candy melt has dripped off.
- Roll the cake ball off of the spoon onto wax paper and allow to dry.
