With this Covid 19 quarantine situation going on, more and more families are looking for new, creative ways to get entertainment at home. There’s only so much tv you can watch and board games you can play before going slightly insane. No? Just me?
For dinner one night, I decided to make things a little more interesting. I got some blankets and pillows together, fixed our meal and we headed outside for a relaxed, laid-back family picnic outside.
The kids and I had a great time and it really took nothing more than a change of scenery. Ready to do it with your family? Here’s a few tips for getting started…
The Setup
First, I got out my blankets and laid them on the ground. I have this blanket strap to carry the blankets easily that I use for when we actually go somewhere with blankets, but it’s not really necessary for this, is it? I added some throw pillows to make it comfy and we all plopped down.
Next up, I packed my picnic basket with all of our food items. I tried to choose mostly finger foods so there wouldn’t be a ton of dishes to wash afterwards.
Food
For food, I kept it simple with finger foods, fruits, a simple pasta salad, and even leftovers (gasp!). Here’s a few ideas for yours:
Fruits
Strawberries, grapes, cantaloupe, and apples are perfect for little fingers and grazing. Plus, they’re healthy, so there’s no fighting the kids to eat what you prepared.
Cold Stuff
Hummus and cucumber or chips and salsa would be a great idea to serve! You just sit there watching the wind blow and dunk and eat. Sounds like a great night to me! I also made this super simple pasta salad that is perfect for any backyard picnic, family reunion, or potluck situation. I made it ahead with colorful veggies and served it in these mason jars with lids for easy transporting. The kids loved the tiny forks I had for them to use as well.
Hot Stuff
We could eat Brazi Bites for any meal (or snack…or breakfast…okay, any time really!), so that was a no brainer to serve. You find them in the freezer section of your local grocery store and just put them in the oven for 20 minutes or so. They taste exactly like those Brazilian steakhouse rolls. Yum!
Okay, this one isn’t so fancy…I served leftovers. It’s what I had and frankly, I’m over cooking 3 meals a day for these people. Lol. I had made Chicken roll-ups the night before and they were perfect with our picnic. All I did was make a chicken breast super thin, put in it some sliced red and green peppers, cover it in fajita seasoning, and roll it up. Then I baked it for 30 or so minutes until it done. Easy and yummy!
